Placing a loved one in a Missouri nursing home is almost always difficult, but the transition may prove easier if you have confidence in the level of care he or she will receive while a resident there. Unfortunately, though, nursing homes are often hotbeds for accidents, injuries and fatalities, many of which stem from falls. At Kelly, Symonds & Reed, LLC, we know that older adults are more likely to fall in nursing homes than many other residential environments, and we have helped many people who suffered fall-related injuries, or had loved ones do so, pursue appropriate recourse.
Per Industrial Safety & Hygiene News, the typical American nursing home, which has about 100 beds, reports between 100 and 200 resident falls every year, although safety advocates attest that the actual number of nursing home falls is notably higher. However, many such facilities fail to report some falls, and this happens for a number of different reasons. In some cases, staff members may fail to report falls because they fear their jobs are at stake, while in other instances, nursing homes may not want to report falls because of a fear of facing sanctions.
In truth, though, nursing homes are extremely dangerous environments as far as falls go, with about 1,800 nursing home residents dying every year in the United States due to fall-related injuries. Furthermore, up to 75% of nursing home residents fall at least once a year, which is more than twice the rate of older adults who do not live in nursing home environments.
More than a third of today’s nursing home falls involve residents who are unable to walk, and some of these cases occur when residents do not get the mobility assistance they need from nursing home staff members. Other times, falls happen because nursing homes are negligent with regard to facility upkeep or safety standards, among other reasons. You can learn more about personal injury on our webpage.
