Telling your spouse that you want a divorce is likely going to be the most difficult conversation you’ve ever had. Not only do you have to worry about how you will handle it, you also have to wonder how they will take the news. Taking the time to plan what you will do and say might be beneficial.
Determining when to tell them is one of the most important things that you need to consider. You should choose a time when both of you are calm and have time to discuss what’s going on. Never just spill this out when things are already heated because it might make things worse.
Be open and honest about what’s going on but don’t just throw out a list of what they did wrong. You should remain factual and respectful throughout the conversation. They might get mad and say mean things out of shock or frustration. Try not to let those get to you. Remember that they didn’t have the time to think about the situation like you did.
Always remember to try to be safe. If there is a chance that things might turn violent, you need to have a neutral third party who can try to ensure that nothing happens. If they do start to get angry, it is best to disengage to give both parties time to relax.
Once you tell your spouse that you want a divorce, it is time to do what you can to protect your own interests during the process. Find out what options you have for each area of the divorce and learn about your rights as you end the marriage.
